I started Crossfit shortly after I ran out of excuses of why I didn’t need to start Crossfit. Dan, my husband started a few months before I did. He would come home and share what he had done that day and how much he enjoyed it. I started Crossfit, at Crossfit Champions in October 2010. It has been the best decision I have ever made. I had been in good shape in high school. Through college and having three kids I gained weight. Needless to say I was ready to change…
Crossfit has become something that is much more than my gym! First, it is something that my husband and I do together; we cheer each other on and encourage each other. Through Crossfit Dan and I have completely changed the way we eat. We now eat grain free. I no longer feel bad after eating and I view food differently, it is now what I need to fuel body. My body has changed so much since starting Crossfit, yes I have lost around 30 pounds, but mostly I just enjoy my body much more now than I ever have. I’m so thankful for the Nicole and the other trainers that have helped me over the years, they put so much time and energy into making me stronger. I’m so thankful that I have met and made many wonderful friends through my Crossfit experience. Matt and Pam Munson, they truly care for teaching and helping people, and I thank ya’ll for your dedication.
Bottom line… I love Crossfit! I have pushed my limits beyond what I think I can do.
What did you expect for yourself when you started training CrossFit?
When I started training at CFC 3 weeks ago, I honestly expected that I would be more prepared than I really ended up being. I had just finished a 10 week training for a half-marathon that I had completed, and only been 3 years out of D1-level college athletics. I was wrong!

What has your experience with CFC been so far?
The experience has been great. It’s what I expected and even a little more. I really like the camaraderie atmosphere, and there’s just something about CrossFit that is very addicting.
Have you achieved your goals since starting? Have they changed? What are you shooting for now?
It’s a little early to see much of a difference. My goal is to lose a little of the body fat that I haven’t already lost, and gain muscle weight. Another goal of mine is to strengthen my legs and core. A stretch goal would be to eventually be at the level to participate in the Open without an embarrassment.
What made you decide to join CrossFit? What were you doing before joining here?
I decided to join CrossFit because I was tired of going to the gym and falling into the same workouts over and over. I was really good about consistently going… but not good about adjusting my workout. Before joining, I was a member at Lifetime Fitness located in City Centre @ Beltway 8 & I-10. I had trained for a half-marathon and completed it. Matt & Madalyn Hanks were really pushing me to join, because they knew I would like the style of workouts. I promised them that I would consider joining after I completed the half-marathon. So I did!
What would you tell a friend who was thinking about joining? There are folks looking at CrossFit every day who think they can’t do it, what would you tell them? Why?
I would tell them that the type of people they see on TV competing is not the norm for members at CrossFit. CrossFit is for anybody, not just supreme athletes. There are all types of people that join CrossFit… male, female, short, tall, wide, narrow, athletic, un-athletic. CrossFit teaches you how to handle the body that God gave you, and to hand it in the most supreme way.
The number one comment we get about CrossFit training is that its too intimidating. Did you think the same thing and, if so, what did you find once you took that step and joined?
I did not think it was too intimidating due to what I’ve experienced through athletics. I have been through many of the same style workouts with the same level of intensity for years, so I was not intimidated. But, my wife, who was also a D-1 level athlete, was intimidated by the workouts before joining. After joining, it was what she had expected. Very hard and intimidating, but she knew she would end up feeling that way because of letting years pass after athletics without getting back into shape.
The one thing I am excited about that I have not experienced yet, is to participate in some of the health siminars that CFC holds periodically. I’m hoping that CFC not only helps me get to the fitness level I desire, but also teaches me about eating healthy.

I love Becca Barowski’s Breaking Muscle website. Love it! Today she shared a guest post Are Women’s Only Gyms Discriminatory? by Nicole Crawford. Its a good read but I have to say I disagree with the entire concept. Ignoring the part where if men had a Men’s Only gym, women would freak out and sue for discrimination let’s just roll with the points presented. I can understand the point about religious reasons. And maybe in the beginning there’s being self conscious of effort and noises and sweat (this concern is not the sole concern of just one gender) but one shared amazing workout and you’re past that forever. Fear of the guys attacking us? Umm…no. If anything working out with a room full of guys makes you feel stronger. At least in our gym it does. Because if you’re finishing in the front or middle of the pack you feel like you’ve really done something and you have! If you finish at the back of the pack there’s no one laughing at you but there sure is a cheering section. Who works out with people pushing you to be your best and being excited for you when you’ve hit a new personal record for yourself? If you don’t, why not?! The support here never comes in based on gender – she did good “for a girl”. The support is the support. Comparing ourselves to others is the best way to make ourselves unhappy. Finding bliss in our own efforts is where happiness grows. I love working out with guys! My husband has been my training partner and coach for 20 years at the end of next month. Wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Smaller Safety Bubble – Nobody’s laughing at anybody after a good CF workout. There’s just too much heavy breathing. Camaraderie (she spelled it wrong) My fist bumps to Jana and Nicole mean just as much to me as fist bumps to Clay and Jamaal after a workout.”

Being able to relate to your classmates regardless of sex, age, height, weight, strength, experience…heck, that’s the magic behind the camaraderie, and the competition…and it’s why those fist bumps Adam mentions are always appreciated!”

Since starting Crossfit a little under a year ago, I have made unbelievable amounts of progress not only in terms of fitness, but also in my self-confidence. To be honest I’m rather a shy guy, and I used to hate working out, to the point where I would rather sit in the bathroom during athletics. Crossfit has completely changed my outlook on how I work out, and my attitude towards hard work. Crossfit has taught me to enjoy and even look forward to doing something challenging. There is nothing I love more than learning a new and more difficult movement or getting a better time on a WOD. Every step of the way, the Crossfit Champions staff have been incredibly supportive, knowledgable, and just downright pleasant. Each and every staff member, regardless of class, is a top notch trainer with years of experience. They make it easy for you to be your best. Perhaps one of Crossfit Champion’s greatest attribute is the people who train there. From day one, my classmates, which I now call friends, have helped and encouraged me to train that much harder, to be that much more dedicated, and to strive towards another PR. I cannot recommend Crossfit Champions highly enough.

Saturday, March 23, was the first annual Matrimony Madness event at CrossFit Champions! We had 11 couples compete with the winners taking $300 and everyone getting t-shirts and super soreness after 3 workouts in 3 hours! Couples who train together and can work as a team under stressful and exhausting situations seem to be happily married. We tested this theory.
There were 3 tough workouts all done partner style, of course, as well as cash prizes for who has been married the longest (19 yrs), the shortest (9 months), who proposed in the coolest location (on safari in Africa), the shortest engagement (3 months), who dated the longest prior to getting engaged (7+ years) and biggest age difference (11.5 years).
The competition was fun and fierce and Tony and Kelly Pontigo came out in front! Nice job married people and see you next year!

What a workout tonight!! 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 of squats, pushups, situps, and pullups. Ripped a callus off my hand during pull-ups. I don’t know why, but that is just AWESOME! But, what really kicked my butt was the 100meter run between each round. It is obvious I do not have a big tank of energy, but everything that has kicked my butt so far has made me better. So I know that tomorrow I will wake up in better condition than I woke up today! I’m going to be sore as hell, but that’s just the construction crews installing the improvements.
Kelly Starrett was recently at CFChampions sharing his Mobility WOD work. The seminar was enlightening! I would highly recommend that you go to it if you are able to. Besides the tools he gave for fixing your self (and the inspiration for this segment on the website) he hammered on the thought of fixing yourself from the bottom up – starting with your feet! Besides the expected “high heels are bad for you” he talked about the importance of foot positioning in just standing!
That’s right…standing. Once you think about it it makes sense. If you’re standing incorrectly, you’re most likely walking incorrectly and running incorrectly and lifting incorrectly and so on and so forth. Everything starts from the foundation. This makes sense. Where this comes up (besides that its great to start at the base and move up) is that there was a study done at East Carolina University on the effectiveness of orthotics in dealing with and correcting runner’s knee. The gist of the study: they are a bandaid and they do nothing to fix the problem. This is not news but it is nice to see it confirmed. Also, you do NOT have to be a member of CFChampions to pick up at our location. The pick up/delivery is done in the parking lot and requires no push ups or fitness lectures. This is a service to our CFC community and the surrounding area. The two businesses are independent of each other. So get your order in and improve your health!

Every person has a certain number of times that they can do something wrong before they have to pay for doing it wrong. We’ve all seen it…the athlete who makes it through high school and into college and blows that knee or shoulder. The twenty something who can eat what ever but starts to get ill or heavy or both in their thirties. The “lucky” gifted athlete that didn’t have to try to do the work or make the team or win the event. It all catches up with us. There is a magic number that each of us gets of these “wrongs” before we get the bill for them and no two people have the same number. For some folks we start paying in our teens but maybe we’ve worn through the number in that short of a time that a non-athlete or non-competitive person would have spread out over a lifetime.
The point to this post is that we all will pay for doing it wrong (or not right) so if we can fix those things that we’re not getting right prior to the bill coming due that would be a win. For some folks its an easy fix – just clean up processed foods from your diet. For others there will be more work involved – re-learn how to run or stand correctly, etc. There is a lifetime’s worth of damage and abuse to correct.
And we all want the results the second that we think the thought but that’s so not realistic. It takes time to make a mess and more time to fix it. So firstly, realize that you have stuff to fix (every person does), then find a place that can help you do that and then be patient and consistent and persistent.
Cheris K has been a CFC member for 8 months. She and Steven have been blogging their progress and struggles in changing their lives. Its not easy and there are highs and lows. No quick fixes, magic spot reducing movements or magic pills for weight loss. Concerted effort, day in and day out has totally transformed them both. CrossFit training is different from any other kind of training you can do.
Unless you are working with a trainer or coach doing personal training or for a sport you don’t have eyes on you or someone holding you accountable to diet, movement safety/progression and body maintenance. What CrossFit gyms are is a place to work on your interest or goals with assistance, guidance and encouragement from the gym’s staff as well as the community. Within the CrossFit gym communities there is no uniformity regarding gyms, coaches, training ideology, etc. This is a complaint about CrossFit in general but, to us, it is a blessing of CrossFit as there are no limits placed on us regarding how we can help folks or how we have to structure our gym.
Where that puts you, the consumer/the athlete/the gym member, is that you have to do your own research to find the right fit for you. Know what your goals are – weight loss, general health and wellness, sport conditioning, CrossFit competing, fun training, injury recovery, running improvement, etc – and then get on the internet. Find the gyms that are close to your home or work. Find the gyms on your route to and from either location. Check out their websites, email, call and visit. CrossFit is about so many things and every gym is different. Find the one that fits you. You can’t know what to ask for if you don’t know what your goals are. The first step in any program is knowing you. Now get out there and find your place, your gym, YOUR community!
This past weekend CFChampions hosted Kelly Starrett’s Mobility Cert. It was AWESOME!
If you will note, this is the second continuing education event for members of the CrossFit Champions staff. We place an emphasis on continual improvement and more education and experience at CrossFit Champions. Its important to have the best educated and most experienced staff possible to take care of our clients. As any professional in any area of expertise will tell you, there has to be an emphasis on learning and improving. Outside information and knowledge from the best in their respective fields helps us to be better able to train our clients. We believe this is important. We believe our clients are important.
