OK, this was the best worst workout to walk in and see on the board. Monday’s GHD (G*!#*&^% Hamstring Destroyer) was the base note of a symphony. Tuesday an absolute blank (maybe all the getting up and down). Thursday layered in tones of groaning quads to compliment my striped and frozen hamstrings. I could envision back of my legs as thick hemp rope supporting the expendable character in a disaster movie seconds before it unravels and snaps sending its doomed victim crashing to the earth (I had a lot of time to think as I climed the stairs at work). The only reason I didn’t curl over backwards from the strain like some carcass in the desert sun was the counter force of my hip flexors which I could picture as those forlorn straps of shredded and frayed truck tire you see while traveling down the interstate. What made this Friday’s workout great was that counterintuitively the running forced compliance from the legs, kicked in those physical coping mechanisms that tap into the part of human physiology that was designed to run hunt and fight on a daily basis (the animal part of us tha knows hesitation, inability and weakness kill). I believe that if you truly push beyond your self imposed limits you earn more than a sense of accomplishment, you are stronger like a sword after quenching. If you missed the PBS special “Samurai Swords” I refer you to the words of my first squad leader on training intensity. “It only feels like your going to die, you’ll sh*^ yourself and pass out before you die.” Now go run, hunt, fight and win.

(If the above seems overly serious, remember 800m is a long time to reflect and doesnt feel very humorous)
