Our Story

CrossFit Champions is different from 99.99% of the gyms in the greater Houston area. It started as a dream in the minds of Matt and Pam Munson way back in ’93 at Texas A&M. Following the safe and logical path, they married, started a family and entered the corporate world all the while exercising and searching for a way to have that dream they had laid out in college…to own their own gym and help others.

In the spring of 2006, after 13 years of training in ‘globo’ gyms and always looking for a better way to train and eat healthy for the best possible results and to get the most out of their time at the gym, Matt stumbled across a reference to CrossFit training on several martial arts message boards. He searched crossfit.com and found what he and Pam had been looking for…the holy grail of fitness. He read every possible post and link they had before sharing the information with Pam. By the time she was done reading the site she was in agreement.

For 13 years they had tried every combination of weights, cardio, rest and HIIT training there was with each program leading to the inevitable boredom with training. CrossFit was something that guaranteed to repeat workouts seldom. It also completely wiped them out. It was a fitness that was so different from anything they had ever done that they soon realized there is no way to prepare for it aside from jumping right into it. Even better, Coach Glassman (CrossFit co-founder) advocates starting almost as the antithesis to the ‘globo’ gym model by not going large and machine filled but rather small and out of the standard residential garage. So that’s what they did. Matt maintained his job in corporate America but he and Pam started the seeds of a future business that would help countless people attain their fitness goals.

CFChampions was the first CrossFit affiliate in the entire Houston area, the 5th in the state of Texas and approximately the 100th affiliate in all of CrossFit. For 20 months, they built CFChampions out of their garage and back yard before moving on to the next location in what used to be an auto repair shop. Two years there found the community they had built bursting at the seams so they moved in April of 2010 into what used to be the golf cart maintenance building at Treeline Golf Course.  This building, at 6000 sq. ft. and the adjoining 1500 sq ft. building will allow CrossFit Champions and Champions Combat Arts to expand to the size they want to get to with programs to meet their community’s needs.  Training people is what Matt and Pam now do full time as well as home school their two girls.

Their goal for CFChampions is to build a gym with a martial arts school feel, where clients are family and the community is strong and supportive of each other. Early clients have joined their efforts and become trainers, expanding the efforts of CFChampions. Unlike ‘globo’ gyms, the people training clients at CFChampions have to be members of the family and in good standing within our community. Programs and opportunities are always improving at CrossFit Champions based on the needs of the clients and imaginations of those involved in making it better. CFChampions is a dream come true for Matt and Pam, and will continue to grow and help their community.
